As Jesus began his public ministry, he left us with a simple invitation; “Come, follow me.” His closing instructions to his disciples could be easily wrapped up in one word, “Go!”. But now, if aliens from another planet were looking through the window of a local church, they would think Jesus’ invitation was, “Come, sit and listen for a long time”, and his closing instruction was, “No!, don’t you dare go out that door!” Somehow many modern day Christians have lost their passion for a fierce and untamed faith.
Christianity over the past two thousand years has in many ways become a religion of conformity where too many people who declare Jesus as Lord have become spiritually domesticated, or said more politically correct, "civilized". They show up for church every week and do those nice things that civilized people are supposed to do. “Don’t be too loud, or don’t make a mess… we are after all “good people”.
You will never be able to convince the New Testament apostles that Jesus endured the agony of the cross just so that we would “act right” in church. Let's think not! Becoming spiritually domesticated is essentially the same as taking an animal out of the wild and methodically training it over time to live comfortably in a zoo. – We don’t believe this is what Jesus had in mind when he said, “Come, and follow me!”
Many churches have sadly become sanitized, sterile, without courage and Holy Spirit power. The call of Jesus demands action. Our Christianity is to be an adventure of trusting God to see the invisible and to do the impossible. To simply say we believe is not enough. For those of us who are willing to embrace the cause of Christ, the cost of participation is nothing less than everything we are and everything we have. We have been made alive to be ignited by the fire of God. Our souls have been redeemed to live with passion, power and a reckless abandon to see His purposes fulfilled.
We have been called by Jesus to live and die with an untamed Christianity. And it’s OK knowing those who are the most religious will be the most offended by our “radical and ridiculous” behavior. (Go figure!)
Many of our churches have sadly become sanitized, sterile and without power. Our only hope is to find the courage to escape this religious prison like box by being willing to risk everything to live free… with an untamed faith that follows hard after Jesus.
